Academy of Metropolis Economic and Social Development  (AMESD) at Capital University of Economics and Business (CUEB) is an independent research institute built on the strength of CUEB’s key national disciplines and two Research Bases for Philosophy and Social Sciences in Beijing (Beijing CBD Research Base and Beijing Economic & Social Development Policy Research Base). Guided by national demand, the academy has been constantly pushing forward the researches on frontline theories and important reality issues concerning the economic and social development of megalopolis by making full use of the advantages of comprehensive economic disciplines of CUEB and the geological niche of the capital of Beijing while integrating the intellectual resources both at home and abroad. Some research orientations enjoy very high academic status with increasing influence in domestic academia.
With such secondary institutes as Centre for Megalopolis Strategic Planning and Policy Research, CBD Research Centre, Capital Circle Research Centre, Modern Service Industry Research Centre, Population and Social Security Research Centre, Research Centre for Urban Resource Environment and Safety Management, etc,  the academy covers such main research areas as megalopolis industrial development, resource ecology, population and welfare, urban zoning, city internationalization and city management and safety and has basically built up a theoretical system and a research team studying the anchorage force, cohesion, bearing capability, spill-over effect and influence of megalopolis. After years’ of efforts, it has produced a series of landmark research results and academic forums. For long, the academy has been devoted to building up platforms for academic communication and cooperation, creating a series of annual forum brands such as “Forum on Urban Internationalization” , “Capital Circle Development Forum”, “China’s Economic Growth and Business Cycles”, and “Consumer Confidence Index Release”, etc, together with a number of annual reports including “CBD Development and Research Report”, and “Urban Internationalization Research Report” which caused quite a hit in the society. the academy also keeps an eye on frontline theoretical studies and hot button themes in reality, promotes theoretical development and takes the leading role in serving the society and enterprises, with abundant achievements and recommendations awarded and adopted by government to bring greater benefits to the society. As to the future, it will endeavor to develop into the “headquarters” for talents, the “major producing area” for academic output, the “incubator” for policy consultation and “experimental field” for innovative scientific research system, as well as the “research highland” for domestic megalopolis study which enjoys great fame and a leading position in China’s academic arena.
